Allergic diseases or reactions may involve any part or system of the body. The most frequently affected are the respiratory system, resulting in hay fever, rhinitis and asthma. Among other organs skin is involved, resulting in allergic dermatitis or atopic eczema, or contact dermatitis (e.g., poison ivy), and hives (urticaria). About 15% of children have seasonal allergies by their seventh birthdays, according to a study in the November 2000 issue of the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology. Boys, firstborn children, those with eczema, those with food allergies, and those whose parents have seasonal allergies are all more likely to develop seasonal allergies. Early wheezing does not appear to increase the chances.
