The American Lung Association just released their 5th annual State of Tobacco Control report.

At the federal level, Congress again failed to give the FDA the authority to regulate tobacco products, failed to increase the cigarette tax and failed to adequately fund programs to help the nation's 45.1 million addicted smokers quit. While much of the rest of the world moved to ratify the worlds first tobacco treaty, the president again chose not to send the treaty to the Senate for ratification.
Over 438,000 people a year1,200 each daycontinue to die from tobacco-related diseases, costing $167 billion in healthcare costs and lost productivity. Smoking is the leading cause of preventable death in this country.
