Caffeine, which is in coffee and many soft drinks, is related to cocaine*, and is considered an alkaloid, stimulant drug. I believe it is unhealthy to partake in alcoholic drinks or any drink that can be addictive or cause side-effects.

A personal article on the negative effects of caffeine.

Food Allergy Survivors Together (FAST)   USA

Your commentsSorry, this is NOT true. Caffeine and cocaine have VERY different chemical structures. They both are stimulants, yes, but by very different mechanisms. The definition of alkaloid is a natural substance containing nitrogen (therefore basic). This is an old definition, and you could include a myriad of plant components in here. As for the allergy, it may be possible to be allergic to caffeine, but it is much more likely to be intoxicated by caffeine. In other words, allergy and toxicity are very different effects. Cerebral allergy is an allergy to a substance, which targets vulnerable brain tissue and alters brain function. Masked cerebral allergy can cause symptoms of mental illness (Walker, 1996; Rippere, 1984; Sheinken et al., 1979). Symptoms range from minimal reactions to severe psychotic states, which may include irrational behavior, disruptions in attention, lack of focus and comprehension, mood changes, lack of organizational skills, abrupt shifting of activities, delusions, hallucinations, and paranoia (Sheinken et al., 1979; McManamy et al., 1936).

Caffeine is a naturally occurring substance found in the leaves, seeds or fruits of more than 60 plants. These include coffee and cocoa beans, kola nuts and tea leaves, which are used to make many favorite beverages such as coffee, tea and cola drinks, and foods such as chocolate.

A nice and reasonably detailed overview.

Your commentsThis article was a highly biased article, probably submitted by a caffeine producer of some sort. There is way too much information to suggest otherwise with regard the safety of caffeine. From personal experience, and one who has seen BP-type symptoms abate with the cessation of caffeine, I conclude, admittedly anecdotal, that caffeine is without a doubt one of the most deleterious substances overly available in the human food supply today. Do you want to feel better? Get off the caffeine (it takes a while to get over the effects--sometimes weeks to months--as it doesn't leave quickly as suggested by this article). From: Jo Delancy
