A Hospital in Boston, MA, examined a group of 499 children of asthmatic/allergic parents from metropolitan Boston. Researchers examined in-home and outdoor fungal concentrations measured once within the first 3 months of life as predictors of wheezing episodes in the first year of life. They found that the occurrence of at least one wheezing episode in the first year of life was correlated with increased exposure to dust-borne fungi, leading them to conclude that there is a link between early fungal exposure and initial evidence of respiratory symptoms.
